Formative Assessment is NOT another written test that happens after instruction is over. Rather, it comes in many forms, happens during instruction, and is used by educators and students to find out what students know and adjust instructional techniques to ensure successful student learning.
Smart Notebook offers a number of quick and easy ways to engage students in formative assessment via Smart Lab activities.
Shout it Out
Shout it Out allows students to input text and images on a mobile device that appears in Notebook on the Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) without ever having to leave the lesson file. I use it for Library orientation with Freshman. Students get in pairs or small groups (learning is social!). I give them a scavenger hunt list to find areas or items in the library and then take a picture of it. We then gather around the IFP and students have to decide which image answers the question displayed on the board and send their image to the board using Shout it Out on their devices. Students love being able to physically move around the library for the scavenger hunt portion.
This activity was a highly effective, engaging, quick way to find out what knowledge some students were missing and give them new information or review information in real time.
This is a great activity to measure student understanding about terms related to an image. In this scenario, a student actually created the Label Reveal LAB activity herself as a way to practice. She then shared it with her Project Lead the Way Biomedical teacher so that other students could use it during the class period. Adding the timer as a Game Component allowed students to compete against each other or themselves for the fastest time of completion. Used in this way, student choice and self-assessment make this a particularly powerful tool for learning.
I plan to cover the following in future blog posts:
